Sensitive restoration and extension of a Grade II-listed Quaker meeting house for a more inclusive, low-carbon future

Low-carbon upgrades that respect heritage

Heat pumps, robust insulation, and breathable materials boost performance while preserving the building’s original fabric.

Making more of what’s already there

Spaces were reconfigured to cater for multifunctional use, adding modern WCs, a consulting room, and four rentable rooms – adding commercial value and long-term flexibility.

Accessible, welcoming design

A new entrance, created from sensitively opening the listed boundary wall, removes barriers. This also improves visibility from the street, welcoming people in and strengthening Quaker values of inclusion.

The Quaker House, located in a conservation area in Lewes, is one of the UK’s most significant 18th-century Quaker buildings. Decades of neglect and unsympathetic alterations left it struggling with water damage, poor acoustics, and limited accessibility.
Ecotecture led the project from concept to completion, restoring its original charm and purpose while preparing it for long-term community use.

Alongside adding an extension to provide more space, we reordered the building to open up the original entranceway, improving accessibility – a bold but worthwhile decision in a building within a conservation area.
