At Ecotecture, we often talk about the importance of retrofit and improving the performance of existing buildings. But our own office has been just as much a learning project as any of our client commissions.
Over the years, our workspace has undergone a series of improvements to reduce energy demand, improve comfort and demonstrate what can be achieved through a fabric-first approach to retrofit. As with any older building, however, there were still opportunities to understand how the building was really performing.
In 2022, we invited airtightness specialists Aldas to carry out a detailed investigation into our commercial offices and the residential accommodation above. Rather than simply identifying that air leakage existed, the aim was to understand exactly where unwanted air was entering the building and what practical steps could be taken to address it.
Using specialist airtightness testing equipment and investigative techniques, the team systematically examined the building to pinpoint the sources of air leakage. The investigation highlighted areas where warm air was escaping and cold air was entering, helping us to build a much clearer picture of the building’s performance. This level of detail allowed us to move beyond assumptions and focus on targeted improvements rather than unnecessary work.
The outcome was more than just a report. Aldas provided practical, prioritised advice on remedial works, giving us a logical roadmap for future improvements. This ensured that any retrofit measures could be carried out where they would have the greatest impact, making the process both more effective and more cost-efficient.
For us, this investigation reinforced an important principle: successful retrofit starts with understanding how a building performs in reality. Every building is different, and taking the time to diagnose issues before implementing solutions leads to better outcomes, lower energy use and more comfortable spaces for occupants.
