Wykehurst Barn

Using the past to shape the future…

Ecotecture drew on the traditional county barn form in the design of this barn, music room and stables which lie in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The result is a high quality building with a reduced overall footprint which sits well in the rural location, and was strongly influenced by the traditional Sussex barn vernacular.

The building replaced an old asbestos barn which was in a state of great disrepair. Ecotecture used PPS 7 government guidelines to justify overriding local policy to warrant the replacement, plus the removal of other redundant sheds and glasshouses. The client provides group music sessions for young children, so the creation of a purpose-built room has been a great asset to the local rural community.

The building is beautifully constructed with a traditional oak frame, using oak pegs with mortice and tenon joints. Locally produced Keymer tiles were also used for the roof.
